Easy DIY Rainbow Birthday Card With Paper Straws Candles

I had some leftover paper straws that hadn’t been used during my birthday party last month.

I could keep them for the next occasion, but I came up with an idea for a DIY rainbow birthday card.

As my paper straws are in rainbow colors, I thought of making a rainbow birthday card, using them as candles.

To make it even more unique, I added a pink paper bow.

This colorful birthday card is a perfect gift for your best friend, boyfriend, girlfriend, or your son or daughter. You choose!

Craft Supplies For a DIY Rainbow Birthday Card

Without further ado, let’s move to the craft supplies you’ll need to make this unique DIY rainbow birthday card.

Here is the list:

1. White greeting card 4×6 inches
2. Rainbow paper straws
3. Pink raffia paper ribbon
4. Glue – I used UHU Glue (twist & glue)
5. Double-sided tape
6. Sharpie markers or your favourite markers
7. Scisors

Step-by-Step Tutorial On How To Make a DIY Rainbow Birthday Card With Paper Straws Candles

Are you ready to make your own DIY rainbow birthday card?

I am, so let’s get started!

Making this DIY rainbow birthday card will take you approximately 30 minutes.

It depends on your craft skills. 😉

Shortcut Preparation:

• Multiple color paper straws with different lengths between 1,5 – 2,2 inches (3,5 – 5,5 cm)
• 1 piece of raffia paper ribbon, color of your choice, 15 inches (38 cm) long

1. Prepare Your Paper Straws

For this craft project, I thought that different lengths of each straw would look better than every straw the same size.

I cut mine in sizes between 1,5 – 2,2 inches (3,5 – 5,5 cm) long. It makes sense for the 4×6-inch greeting card I’m using.

Of course, you can cut your paper straws not precisely as I show you in the picture.

After that, squeeze each one gently, so they are flatter.

Next, measure how long they are while lying together in a row. It turned out that mine are 2 inches (5 cm).

It will help later on!

2. Cut And Glue Raffia Paper Ribbon

Cut one 15-inch (38 cm) piece of the raffia paper ribbon.

I recently bought a pack of raffia paper ribbons and chose a pink color for this DIY rainbow birthday card, as it pairs really well with the rainbow colors.

Fold your paper ribbon in half and find its center.

Next, take the measurements from the previous step; in my case, it’s 2 inches.

Then, hold your ribbon in one hand and apply glue to a 2-inch-long part in the center of your ribbon.

So, it’s going to be 1 inch from the left of the center to the left, and 1 inch from the center to the right.

Take a look at the picture below.

Take your white greeting card and place it horizontally.

NOTE: Check if the card opens properly, from bottom to top.

After that, stick it onto the paper roughly 1 inch from the bottom edge, in the middle of a card like so.

3. Stick Paper Straws Onto The Card With Ribbon

For each piece of paper straw, use either glue or double tape.

I sometimes like to use double-sided tape because I know my straws will be well-secured on the card and won’t fall off.

In this case, I’m using a thin, 1/4-inch double-sided tape.

Then, gently peel off the white bit of the tape and stick each piece of paper straw onto the card.

Leave just a little bit of space from the end of a paper ribbon. So, it looks like the candles are wrapped in ribbon.

NOTE: Remember to stick the paper straws in the rainbow color order.

4. Tie the paper candles up with a bow

Next, take two loose pieces of paper ribbons and tie them together in a slight bow to secure your candles.

If you struggle to tie a perfect bow, here’s a short video to help you:

5. Draw the candles’ knots and flames

The last thing to do here is to draw candles’ knots and flames.

So, our paper candles, which were once straws, now look like real candles.

To do so, I use Sharpie markers in 3 colors:

1. Brown for knots
2. Yellow for flames
3. Light peach for shadow on flames

You can use any colors you have at home; yellow, orange, or red should be fine.

If you don’t have a brown color, black would work as well.

To start, use a brown marker to draw knots – little marks – above the candles.

Next, move on to flames. Use a yellow marker to draw a little, tear-drop-shaped flame above each candle.

And finally, add a bit of dimension to your flames by drawing one line on the left side of a flame and a small mark inside.
